The Venus Project is an attempt to approach our society's shortcomings by looking at the root causes, rather than at a symptomatic level.  The Bottom line is that no real change can ever come out of our current model of scarcity and currency exchange.  What is necessary is a complete overhaul of our concept of society, based on a modern understanding of technology, resources, and the failure of our systems in the past.  We need to get beyond the thought form of trade, be it barter or currency and allow the automation of the majority of jobs that we have been using to keep ourselves busy and that allow us to earn purchasing power for trinkets specifically designed to break, so that by definition we can be employed to make more of them.  This new model eliminates the need for advertising and corporations, the need to have a useless job, and it eliminates the need to hoard resources to protect yourself against your fellow man.

Understand, technology created by human ingenuity frees us from labor and increases our quality of life. If we comprehend this, we can then realize that it is the intelligent management of our resources that deserves our attention, not the mundane grunt work that we are doing now.  The earth's resources are the means by which we are able to maintain our prosperity.  Money is therefore a barrier between these resources and us.  The only reason to have money is because of a real or imagined scarcity of these resources.  Water and air is abundant enough that it is easy to see the absurdity of selling these resources.  If the materials needed to create infrastructure, housing, transportation and the entertainments of abundance were in high enough supply, there would be no reason to sell anything.  Similarly if the production of goods was fully automated, there would be no reason to have a job.  With these social needs taken care of, money would have no purpose at all.  The big question:  do we have enough resources and technology to make this a worldwide reality today?

Yes we do.
